Lendl Simmons made his seventh ODI half-century in ten innings to lead West Indies to a strong start in the first one-dayer against Bangladesh in Mirpur. Adrian Barath provided him solid support early on before a hamstring injury forced him off the field in the first one-dayer to follow the 'no runners' rule.
The other rule changes didn't seem to have much impact on the match - there was a new ball from either end but there was little movement or spin on offer - and the bowling Powerplay was again taken as early as the rules allowed.
Simmons and Barath were watchful early on, making only 11 in the first five overs despite a gift of five overthrows. The first boundary off the bat wasn't an entirely convincing one as Barath barely managed to poke the ball past the keeper.
Simmons was clearly getting fidgety with the slow progress: in the sixth over, he was hurried into a pull which was top-edged just wide of the bowler, then he mistimed a straight drive with which he still managed to find the boundary, before jumping outside leg as he looked to crash a short ball through off without managing to connect. He punched the air in frustration after missing out on a cut in the next over, but showed how good he could be with fours through cover off the back foot and then the front foot in the over.
Barath was mainly taking singles, letting Simmons do most of the scoring as the partnership reached 50. His second boundary was a powerful drive past long-off in the 14th over, but he then had to leave the field with hamstring trouble. There was some concern that Simmons could also join him retired hurt after being hit on the thigh by a fielder's throw - which if it had hit the stumps would have run out Simmons - and left him writhing on the ground in pain. Simmons recovered though, after some treatment from the physio.
